The sustainability criteria for food products will be developed in cooperation with the Finnish food industry.
As part of Food Data Finland’s growth programme, Infiné has been granted Business Finland funding to develop food sustainability data services in international markets. The project adds to the food sustainability information model built by Food Data Finland. The project will have an impact on the international product information standard.
“For sustainability, much of the standardisation work is still incomplete and Finland can lead the way in this area too. Food Data Finland’s project brings together all of the Finnish pioneers in the food sector as part of GS1, so the opportunities are significant,” says Tiina Saukko, CEO of Infine.
GS1 standards are used in 116 countries and by more than 2 million companies worldwide. By standardising sustainability data in all countries, the sustainability of Finnish food will serve as a competitive advantage in international markets.
Product data transparency and standards help automate the production of data for different purposes – for example, to comply with current and future EU directives and reporting requirements. Standardised data can be used to refine sustainability parameters for products, such as raw material and risk country analyses. Currently, the sustainability information software developed by Infine uses the GS1 Synkka product information service as the main source of product information.
As a part of the project, Infine will commission research to provide the background for the objective definition of sustainability criteria. Infine is looking for pilot companies to participate in this work.
In the case of Finland, Infine’s software, Sustainability Data Service, is already automated for food products, and the next step is to pilot the scalability of the product internationally.
